
Prof Gawie Botma of the Journalism Department launched his book Reconsidering the history of South African journalism: The ghost of the slave press at the 2025 bi-annual conference of the International Association of Media and History (IAMHIST) at the UCT Graduate School of Business in Cape Town on Tuesday 1 July. Around 150 delegates from all over the world attended the conference themed “Decentering media histories & practices” between 30 June and 2 July. Prof Botma also presented a paper, ” Slavery remembered in the South African press”, based on recent research, and also chaired the session “Mapping the Anglo-Boer War across French & South African presses”.
