Honours Class presents Their Doccies

Our BA Hons class was split into groups of six, each tasked with creating a documentary on different topics.

Group 1 titled their documentary “Building Perspectives,” produced by Sherie Vollenhoven, Rachel Jonker, Mia Oliver, and Amy Lindstrom. It showcased the daily work life of construction workers, highlighting their routines from start to finish, the challenges they face in the workplace, and their aspirations within the construction sector.

Group 2 produced a documentary titled “For I and I,” created by Dune Van Jaarsveld, Kara le Roux, Mandisa Maphisa, and Nic Gleeson. This documentary explored the Rastafarian lifestyle, presenting it as an alternative way of life compared to modern society. It delved into the practices, values, and beliefs held by Rastafarians.

Group 3 named their documentary “Spin the Stigma,” produced by Nicola Amon, Marthinus Botes, Bayanda Gumede, and Allison Hermanus. It focused on the stigma surrounding pole dancing, unpacking misconceptions and demonstrating that pole dancing is a legitimate sport that struggles to attract sponsorship due to societal prejudices.

Group 4 titled their documentary “Trop (Troop),” produced by Maliza Adendorff, Emma Hamman, Aurelia Mouton, and Lara Smith. This documentary showed how locals in Betty’s Bay coexist with baboons, depicting the daily chaos and frustrations of this coexistence. It also highlighted the local municipality’s efforts to protect wildlife by employing rangers to safeguard baboons from human violence.

Group 5 comprised Nkululeko Ndlovu, Abigail Baard, Iva Fulepu, and Antoinette Steyn. Their documentary, titled “For His Sake,” centered on a historical barber shop in the heart of Idas Valley in Stellenbosch. It traced the barber shop’s legacy, passed down through generations, and emphasized its significance to the community.

Group 6 producers were Ubaid Abrahams, Eugene Marais, Erinman Nedum, and Ntokozo Khumalo. Their documentary, named “Between Shifts,” followed a young man living a dual life as a paramedic and a car spinner. It depicted how he balances saving lives with his hobby, which serves as his safe haven.
