ICA conference comes to Cape Town in 2026

The Department of Journalism is pleased to be informed that the International Communication Association (ICA) will host their annual conference in Cape Town in 2026.

This announcement was made during the most recent iteration of the ICA conference which took place in Gold Coast, close to Brisbane in Australia, at the end of June.

Prof Herman Wasserman, chair of the Department of Journalism, and Dr Marenet Jordaan, senior lecturer, attendedthe 74th annual conference of the ICA with the theme:“Communication and Global Rights”.  Wasserman, who is an ICA fellow and board member, led a panel on his forthcoming co-edited book on WhatsApp and co-organised a pre-conference. Jordaan served as mentor for the Journalism Studies Division’s PhD colloquium.

Wasserman will also serve as the chair of the local host organising committee for the 2026 conference in Cape Town.

The ICA conference is a highlight on the calendar of all media, journalism and communications scholars as it usually brings together thousands of like-minded scholars from across the world.

Next year’s conference will take place in Denver, Colorado (USA).
