Prof Herman Wasserman, chair of the Department of Journalism at Stellenbosch University and director of the newly established Centre for Information Integrity in Africa, highlighted the importance of information integrity at the university’s first Thought Leader Event for 2025.
Hosted on Monday, 10 March by SU’s Department of Development and Alumni Relations and supported by Investec, the event brought together thought leaders to explore pressing global issues.
In his presentation titled “Deepfakes, Chatbots, and Disinformation: Why we should care about information integrity”, Prof Wasserman addressed the growing threat of disinformation to democracies worldwide. He outlined a range of solutions to tackle this complex challenge, including regulation, fostering a culture of investigative journalism, enhancing media literacy, and promoting academic research.
Following his presentation, Prof Wasserman (middle) was joined by Pieter Swart (left), Director of Special Projects at Stellenbosch University, and Hugo van der Ahee (right), Head of Winelands Region for Investec.
