The Department of Journalism at Stellenbosch University (SU) recently welcomed back around 50 proud alumni for its first-ever Homecoming event. Held during SU’s annual Homecoming weekend, the gathering brought together graduates from various years, who returned to reconnect with their alma mater, reflect on their experiences, and celebrate the department’s rich history.
The event was honored by the presence of Professor Deresh Ramjugernath, SU’s Rector and Vice-Chancellor Designate, who engaged with both older and younger alumni.
The Homecoming also offered alumni an exclusive opportunity to explore the department’s current programs and future ambitions. A highlight of the event was the unveiling of the department’s new promotional video, which featured vibrant interviews with staff and students discussing their work. The video showcases the hands-on, real-world training journalism students receive, equipping them to tackle the challenges of today’s media landscape.
For alumni who were unable to attend, the department extended an invitation to share their stories and memories via email at journalism@sun.ac.za. These submissions will be featured in the upcoming edition of the alumni newsletter, Janus.
Alumni are encouraged to keep their contact details updated by sending their information to alumni@sun.ac.za, ensuring they remain connected with the SU community and future events.
This first-of-its-kind Homecoming was more than just a reunion; it was a celebration of past accomplishments and a glimpse into the bright future of Stellenbosch University’s Department of Journalism.
